The Ghan offers an
unsurpassed view of Australia - North to South or vice versa over three days
through the very centre of Australia.
The train is named after the Afghan cameleers who once traversed this
route. A journey on The Ghan is one way
to see the two jewels of Australia's Northern Territory – the Red Centre (see
my postcard of Uluru) and the tropical Top End. 
The Ghan takes 54 hours to
travel the 2,979 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide with a four-hour stopover
in Alice Springs.
It is operated by Great
Southern Rail and the train is formed of between 16 and 26 carriages. Haulage is provided by a Pacific National NR
class locomotive.
